Merengue is the friendliest dance in the Latin world — a steady marching 1-2 beat that anyone can pick up in a single class. Originating in the Dominican Republic, merengue is the soundtrack of every Latin wedding, family party and club night in Vegas, and once you have the basic, you'll never sit out another song. Our open-level merengue class welcomes complete beginners and seasoned dancers in the same room, with partner rotations that keep the energy light and social.
What you'll learn
We start with the basic side step and posture, then layer hip motion, hand turns, the classic cradle, and short combinations that look beautiful on a crowded dance floor. Because merengue's timing is forgiving, students typically nail a usable pattern in the first 20 minutes. Leads learn how to telegraph turns clearly; follows learn how to spin centered and balanced. We also cover musicality: matching your tempo to típico vs. modern merengue and styling your steps to fit the song.
