What happens in a cumbia class
Cumbia is a partner dance built on a simple, steady basic step. That's why so many people pick it up fast at parties and family events.
In class, you start with the basic step and the count. Once your feet feel easy, you add turns and simple styling. The goal is to dance comfortably to the music, not to memorize a long routine.
If you want a preview before you come, read our guide to cumbia steps, turns and styling.
You don't need a partner or experience
Come alone. Partners rotate in class, so you dance with different people and nobody sits out.
You also don't need any dance background. If you're new to partner dancing in general, our beginner dance lessons for adults page explains how classes work.
Cumbia has many styles
Cumbia isn't one sound. One of our instructors ranked their favorite cumbia genres in a recent video, and the list shows how much the music changes from style to style:
- Cumbia sonidera. Their number one. "I grew up with this my whole life."
- Cumbia rebajada. "A lot more calmer." Slower music gives you time to enjoy each step.
- Cumbia huepa. "I love the steps. A lot more steps."
- Cumbia colombiana. "The rich sound, the folk in it."
- Cumbia tropical. "I can just imagine myself at the beach."
- Cumbia norteña. "Not that I don't like it, I just don't really dance to it."
That last point matters for you as a dancer. You can enjoy a style of music and still find that some songs feel better on the floor than others. As you practice, you'll start to notice which cumbia makes you want to move.
A calmer song is a good place to practice your basic step. Faster or busier styles give you room to add more footwork once you're ready.
